Honey’s benefits in nutrition cited

Honey is more than just a sweetener. It’s a highly nutritious food that offers tremendous antioxidants. Honey contains a variety of flavonoids and phenolic acids which acts as antioxidants scavenging and eliminating free radicals.

Composed primarily of carbohydrates and water, honey also contains three important minerals according to the Philippine Food Composition Table: Calcium for strong bones and teeth; phosphorous for energy and bone muscle growth; and iron for healthy blood.

Honey is also used for beauty and well-being. According to the National Honey Board of the US, cosmetic manufacturers have used honey in everything from hand lotions and moisturizers to bar soaps and bubble baths. (more…)

Are cola drinks safe and healthy?

by Rafael Castillo, MD

MANILA, Philippines — Just when we thought it was safe to drink colas, particularly the low-calorie or diet colas, some researchers tell us they’re not too sure if that were so. One study even shows that colas may be associated with high blood pressure more than coffee — at least for women cola drinkers. Another study says it might be associated with brittle bones making postmenopausal women at risk for osteoporosis

Scientific data from the two large Nurses Health studies — which tracked down the medical history of more than 155,000 women for 12 years — puzzled researchers with the finding that women who drank even just one caffeinated cola drink every day had a slightly higher risk of high blood pressure. This risk increased progressively with more cola intake daily, as reported by lead researcher Wolfgang C. Winkelmayer, MD, ScD, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard University in Boston.

Stop the marketing of unhealthy food to children!

The EcoWaste Coalition unleashed a mouthful as it joined Consumers International in celebrating World Consumers’ Rights Day (WCRD) last March 15, seeking global and local action to stop the marketing of unhealthy food to children.

“Junk food contributes to the childhood obesity epidemic and other preventable diseases, and also adds to the garbage crisis with the tons of trash created by the production and consumption of these unhealthy foods that are often packed or served in single-use plastic materials,” said Ofelia Panganiban of the EcoWaste Coalition. Keep cholesterol under control

ENSURE YOUR HEARTS HEALTH by keeping your cholesterol levels in check all the time.

One important and relatively easy way to do this is to watch what you eat. The American Heart Association says fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes tend to be low in fat and have no cholesterol. They are also good source of dietary fiber, complex carbohydrates and vitamins.

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends eating foods high in complex carbohydrates and fiber. Large amounts of soluble fiber, such as pectin and oat bran, in a diet low in saturated fat, may reduce total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. (more…)
