Does Dieting Motivation Work?

I’ve been kicking this term “dieting motivation” around my brain for awhile now. I’ve got to be honest (as I strive to annoyingly remain!), every time this phrase comes to mind, I sortof cringe and shrivel up inside. “Dieting Motivation” invokes thoughts of denial, suffering, and heartbreak.

I’ve grown quite averse to using the term dieting at all. I guess because I’m constantly preaching “lifestyle” which is diametrically opposed to “dieting” in my mind. Adding motivation to the mix just doubles my depression. Ugh. I have to diet AND be motivated? No, sorry, that really doesn’t sound like me. I think I’ll pass.

Personally, I’m the type of person who’d rather exercise more and watch my calories less. There’s nothing wrong with that. But I realize there may be a few of you out there who don’t agree with this philosophy. And that’s ok, too. But then you have to come to terms with the fact that you will need to make changes in what you eat, how much you eat certain items, and how you feel about eating.

“How I feel about eating”? What?! I know it may sound crazy but especially us Americans, we eat more as a recreational event, as entertainment. We’ve long since disconnected with the fact that the act of eating is to fulfill a need of our body. And the fuel you use to stoke your body’s energetic fire makes a huge difference in how you feel and deal with plenty of seemingly unrelated issues in your life. Being a healthy eater can impact EVERY, EVERY, EVERY area of your life. Because it’s influencing how you feel, your emotions, your energy level…

People are always so focused on weight loss. And yes, I realize that is the focal point of my business, HOWEVER, there is such a struggle mentality surrounding weight loss success. And I think that if more people would begin to focus on general health and well-being, weight loss would be a happy side effect.

For dieting motivation to be effective at all, you’ve got to come in contact with your deepest connections to food and what’s holding you back. Just weight loss? Well, you’ve got to investigate the why’s of that desire. Knowing you SHOULD lose weight is not enough. You must reach deep down and find a true motivation that will carry you through tough times. When you’ve had a really bad day and just want to drown yourself in (fill-in-the-blank with your preferred diet destroyer), you’ve got to be able to pull yourself up out of that with a vision that’s more powerful. Inspiring your kids maybe. You have to find the precise motivation that will work for you.

Health issues from added sugar

Ever since its discovery, sugar has been loved by people all over the world. It is like a special ingredient that adds magic to food. Every year, sugar consumption increases due to the rising demand for this commodity.

There is an environmental predisposition to sweet taste because sugar is one of the cheapest ingredients in food, along with water and salt, that adds flavor. From pastries, to bread, fruit juices, and candies, sugar is something that the world definitely can’t live without.

However, too much of anything is bad for the body. Hence, due to increasing health risks brought about by excessive sugar intake, the World Health Organization has recently recommended that added sugars should be at maximum of 10 percent of the total calorie intake per day. (more…)

Do or diet: The new weight loss plans

by Tyrone M. Reyes, M.D.

The titles of the newer diet best-sellers vary, but their promises are strikingly similar. Eat “lots and lots of great food in smart ways,” says The Abs Diet. “Lose weight by enjoying satisfying amounts of the best food on the planet,” promises The Sonoma Diet. And The Best Life Diet lets you “live happily on the diet while still meeting your weight-loss goals.”

Living happily on a diet plan seems to fly in the face of most people’s experience. In a 2006 Pew Research Center survey, more than 90 percent of 2,250 adults said losing weight was “hard” or “very hard.” So the latest popular diets focus on how to shed calories and pounds in a way that keeps you from feeling hungry. In contrast with earlier diets, which tended to severely restrict major nutrient categories — carbohydrates in the case of the Atkins Diet, fat in the case of Ornish, Pritikin, and many other diets — this latest generation of diets recognizes that fat and carbs represent more than expendable calories. They fill you up, add flavor and variety, and impart important health benefits, if you choose wisely. (more…)

Two Main Body Building Programs Explained

Body building is a sport many people are not entirely familiar with mainly because they generally only hear about the results of contests and generally not about the actually training that is involved in such preparation for the contests. Additionally, most people work out in gyms to keep in shape and generally follow the same workout all year round. When one is training for a body building competition there will be a need for two separate body building programs in order to achieve the ability to enter a contest. These two phases will be clearly examined and explained herein. The body building programs are the off-season phase, the pre-contest phase and the contest phase.

Off Season Phases

The off season phase involves body building programs that center on mass building. That is to say, during this phase the goal is to get as huge as humanly possible and not worry so much about definition. Now, this weight gain must be primarily muscle because packing on excess fat will not do anyone any good. It will simply make the pre-contest cycle significantly more difficult and that is a self-defeating venture. So, instead one needs to watch diet closely and to perform a significant volume of mass building exercises. That means the primary exercises to be performed during this phase will involve serious compound exercises such as military presses, bench presses, etc. This cycle usually runs several months and requires much consistency in order to effectively be undertaken.

Pre-Contest Contest Phases

The pre-contest phase is usually refers to the six to eight weeks that precede a competition and involve a “shredding” process where the goal to be achieved is definition of the muscles. This involves a significant amount of isolation exercises that target single body parts as well as a great deal of cardio…repeat…a great deal of cardio. Of course, the other area of consideration that is critical during this phase is diet. Often, when people think of body building programs they often think of exercises as opposed to the quality diet that is the epicenter of all body building programs. No matter how hard a person works out or how much time they invest in exercise, all work will be completely thrown out the window if a poor and sloppy diet is employed. As such, it is critical not to eat poor quality foods or to eat any type of food at levels of excess that could prove self defeating.
